AT HUNTER MARKETS, HOW TO FIND THE BEST OF THE REST
How many times have you visited a farmer’s market? Do you ever have trouble finding what you want at the greatest price and quality? Maybe going to the markets sounds a little too difficult?
This article is for you if you want to try farmers markets but are intimidated by the prospect of getting the greatest fruit. I looked at the greatest vegetable vendors in Newcastle and Lake Macquarie last week, and we served up the best fruit the week before. It’s all the other things today! Meat, milk, eggs, bread, honey, and snacks are all available in the markets.
Wootton Valley Meats (and more!) is a company that specializes in meats from the Wootton Valley area.
Jim’s high-quality beef comes from a family farm 14 kilometers inland from Bulahdelah, in the picturesque Wootton Valley. His beef is pasture-raised Angus and cross Hereford/Sant-Gertrudis, which is hormone-free and tasty. Jim also offers lamb, poultry, eggs, and honey (see below), as well as providing the finest customer service! This is where I get all of my meat and poultry, and I highly suggest his lamb and chicken.
A note about honey from the markets: sure, it will cost more than honey from the supermarkets, but believe me when I say it tastes better than anything you can purchase there. Heat treatment of supermarket honey improves the appearance but degrades the flavor and eliminates any beneficial yeast and enzymes necessary for activating vitamins and minerals in the body. As a result, going natural is significantly healthier for you!
Milk from the Moon
This Jersey milk is rich and creamy, unlike anything you’ve ever tasted at a store. The milk is pasteurized and bottled one small batch at a time in the old-fashioned style, and it is not blended with milk from other dairies. It’s not homogenized and has cream on top, just as nature intended.
Milk from the Moon is sold by Karl & Cathie Johnson and comes from Ian & Sue Lindsay’s dairy farm in the Hastings Valley (near Wauchope). Their herd of Jersey cows are grass fed, with no pesticides or man-made fertilisers used in their pasture production.
Goat Milk from Sherallee
If you’re allergic to cow’s milk, goat’s milk might be a good substitute. Lactose is still present, however it is absorbed more thoroughly and readily than cow’s milk. And how fortunate are we to have access to the family-owned Sherallee Goat Dairy in Cooranbong, which provides fresh, unpasteurized goat’s milk?
Bill’s Sourdough Breads are certified organic and stoneground.
For those looking for a gluten-free alternative to white or brown bread, sourdough is a terrific choice. It is baked from a starting and often comprises higher-quality flours than store loaves. Bill’s breads include no extra yeast or sugar, no pesticides, and no artificial preservatives or flavors.
They also make a fantastic Kamut Sourdough, an ancient grain that is strong in vitamin E, Thiamin, Riboflavin, Phosphorous, Magnesium, and Zinc and has a nice buttery flavor. Kamut isn’t gluten-free, but it’s a wonderful choice if you’re following a gluten-free diet.
The Banana Bread Man Bakehouse is a bakery that specializes in banana bread.

Peter’s Thai Cuisine at Newcastle Farmer’s Market is both delicious and healthy for you, and I always make sure to get a couple of curries to have in the freezer, ready for a quick meal. Just defrost and add tofu or chicken and veggies, and you’re good to go. It contains no preservatives, no artificial colours, no artificial flavours and no added MSG.
Chai is an Indian mixed-spice tea that has grown quite popular in the United States. It’s a fantastic option for individuals who want a hot beverage but don’t want the sugar punch of a hot chocolate but don’t want to drink caffeine. I’m not usually a fan of Chai, but this one is wonderful and located in Newcastle!
Worcestershire Sauce from Kentholme Condiments
This sauce is produced from scratch and contains no preservatives, adding a great flavor to your cuisine!
Did you know that you may purchase chickens in Newcastle’s markets? I’d love to have a place where I could keep hens. These market chickens lay eggs and are a terrific addition to the backyard if you’re fortunate enough to have some space!
Dominic, the Florist
This is my one little indulgence: a bouquet for work and another one for myself. Flowers make any area seem gorgeous and alive, and seeing Dominic always brightens my day.
Treats for Dogs
Doggy treats from Teacher’s Pet are fantastic; they ship internationally and don’t include any of the chemicals found in store goodies. Dogs, too, need attention. Every week, I purchase a package for my little dog.
If you reside in the Hunter area, these stallholders may be found at the following two large farmers markets:
Newcastle: Most Sundays at Newcastle Show Grounds or Hunter Stadium, and now every Wednesday afternoon/evening at Newcastle Show Grounds or Hunter Stadium.
Speers Point: Every month on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays, at Speers Point Park. Note that since they have fewer booths, not all of the above stallholders are certain to be present, but there is some overlap.
